MK Dons host Tottenham Hotspur v Watford Carabao Cup tie

You’d be forgiven for wondering why Spurs are playing their “home” tie in the Carabao Cup this evening far away from home, in Milton Keynes.

The new Tottenham Hotspur stadium will feature the world’s first dividing grass pitch

Spurs’ temporary home for the past two years has been at Wembley stadium, whilst they turn White Hart Lane into a state-of-the-art 62,000 seat stadium.

The new innovatively named ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’ was due to be ready for Spurs’ first home fixture this season, but a number of issues have caused massive delays.

Whilst most home fixtures have continued to be played at Wembley during the delay, organisers were not able to get the stadium ready in time for this evenings match following the Anthony Joshua fight it hosted at the weekend.

Fans frustrated by stadium developers

The developers of the new stadium have asked for patience, and are stressing that they are in fact way ahead of time when you consider the work undertaken.

An engineer working on the new stadium claimed:

We’ve tried to do something in double time.

If you look at any other project of this nature you wouldn’t have achieved as much as we’ve achieved with the stadium.

Be patient with us, we understand the frustrations.

However, frustration has grown amongst the Tottenham fans due to the lack of communication around the opening.

Secretary of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters trust says fans just need to know one way or the other:

As fans we’d like to know, we’d like some certainty. If it’s going to be next year then fine. Tell us. We can plan for that.

Key innovations of the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The new innovative stadium has a deal with the NFL where it will host games on a separate concealed pitch.

The stadium’s key features:

  • A 62,062 all-seat stadium
  • The world’s first dividing grass pitch will sit on top of an artificial NFL pitch, and slide out under the stands when not in use
  • A 17.5k seat single tier south stand
  • Acoustic sound engineers from U2s shows have worked on optimising the shape of the stands for better sound travel and atmosphere
  • The stands have a unique shape to ensure the supporters are sat closer to the pitch than any other stadium of its size
  • Firms from all over the UK have been contracted to build its unique structure and technology

Tottenham v Watford match prediction

Pochettino will certainly ring the changes for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Watford. He’ll be looking to give valuable playing time to the players on the fringes of Spurs’ starting eleven.

Watford will more likely see this competition as a chance for silverware this season, and will want to keep up the momentum to their fine start to their Premier League season.

Expect an end-to-end match with both teams playing on the front foot.

Watford’s more stable lineup could well have the edge over a second string Spurs tonight.
