After a turbulent week, United will be under pressure to continue their Champions League form following on from a win in their opening tie against Young Boys.

This first of two consecutive Champions League home ties at Old Trafford will be crucial as United’s next visitors will be group leaders Juventus.

United will need to ensure they pick up points versus Valencia if they are to progress from a tough group, as one of these two sides are the most likely to come runners up in group H.

Valencia looking to exploit a lacklustre United

If ever there were a good time to play United at Old Trafford, Valencia will be thinking it’s now.

United have looked bereft of focus and determination in recent games, and have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and beaten by a struggling West Ham side in the last week.

The biggest issue manager Jose Mourinho seems to be facing is the lack of effort his getting from his players.

It was reported this week that when they played West Ham last weekend, the United players recorded fewer sprints than any other Premier League side.

They made just 58 sprints in the 90 minutes against a weak West Ham, which was significantly less than the second worse side (Wolves, 77).

13 of those team sprints came from full back Like Shaw.

Mourinho is clearly facing problems motivating his players to work hard for him, a familiar pattern seen during his previous downfall at Chelsea.

Valencia play a fast-paced attacking game, so will be looking to utilise the speed of Guedes and Moreno and force United onto the back foot.

What the managers have to say

Mourinho continued to ignore speculation about his exit and tried to turn the spotlight on his players stating:

Every player is different, no player is the same, I see different actions but what you see is not really inside.

I see upset people, some people that don’t look like they lost a game.

When asked about this being good time to play United, Valencia boss Marcelino said:

We’ll win if we play well. Whether it’s the best or the worst moment to play them, who knows?
There’s no way that the previous game you’ve played can have anything to do with this game coming up.

Punters will be looking tonight to continue to cash in on Man United’s downward spiral.

If Mourinho really has lost the dressing room then Tuesday’s game really could be a repeat of the weekend’s performance.

Expect United to sit back from the start. Jose will set his side out to defend and make sure as to not lose the game. He will see a point as a job well done, and will be aware of Valencia’s counter-attacking threat.

A low-scoring game and even 0-0 draw is most likely to be the best bet in this fixture.
